"You reap what you sow" has become such a cliché phrase. Many of us can probably remember our mothers or grandmothers saying it at some point in our childhood. When I was little we had a kids cassette tape (yeah, those plastic rectangle things, and it was a bright neon color!) that had a song by that title and to this day every time I hear the phrase, the song plays in my head endlessly. I can sing it for you if you want; it's annoyingly catchy.
Well, lately the reality of how fundamental this phrase is for life has become very...well, real. It comes from the Bible, by the way, in Galatians 6:7, and it affects everything we do because it's just so logical. Obviously, if you put a banana seed in the ground, you're going to get a banana tree! Or plant? Bush? Sorry, I'm a city girl and don't even know how to grow bananas, but I get the concept. I get that if you start out doing something bad, like lying, you will "reap" trouble. If you start out doing something good, like sharing, you will most likely "reap" something good.
But the great revelation I've had recently (and you can go ahead and say "duh") is that if you start out doing nothing, you're going to reap NOTHING! All together now: duh!
Like laundry. Or making dinner. Or calling that new girl from church. Or donating unused-almost-new clothing that's taking up half our closet space. Or finishing that book. Or creating the habit of prayer. Or encouraging that facebook friend. Or researching about herb care before they all dry up and die. Or saving for a special gift. Or getting involved in church. Or doing things to actively bless people.
All of those have been going through my own mind lately but it's not enough to think about them. We all know dinner doesn't get made by thinking; not even by talking about it! It's one thing to do good or bad things, but it's an entirely different matter to do NOTHING...and I think that's where most of us are stuck.
May God bless and help us all to do SOMETHING today!
