Always Assume the Best

Why is it so hard to do this? I've been trying to make this a habit. Instead of letting negative thoughts come in automatically, I want to be a person who always assumes the best about people, who never loses faith in who God made them to be. I might be disappointed, but at least I won't be guilty of false accusations or rumors. God sees us with so much grace and that is how I wish to see others. I think we all know how much conflict and misunderstandings could be avoided if we all did this.

The other day I read some verses in my favorite book of the Bible, Philippians, about what we should let our thoughts dwell on: "Whatsoever things are true... noble... right... pure... lovely... admirable... excellent... praiseworthy...think on such things." I was struggling with assuming the worst instead of the best, so obviously the solution was to make a list! I listed specific things about life around me to fit each word so that I could focus my mind on that rather than on negative thoughts. It's not a magic solution, but sometimes you have to be proactive even about little things if you really are serious about wanting to see change in your life.

  1. Now there is a great idea! Listing the specific things and focusing your mind to think on those things rather than the negative. I have been reminded so often lately by the Lord that the things He asks of us are actually "active" verbs not passive. Like choosing to think on things that are lovely...this is an "action". Forgiveness, kindness, serving, praying, these are all action verbs. And yes, I agree that when we choose to particpate in these willingly, we will see change in our lives. Thank you for your insights and challenges...good reminders. Rebecca
